Reader Engagement with Wikipedia’s Medical Content

Abstract

Wikipedias extensive health and medical entries, maintained by WikiProject Medicine (WPM), are well supported by external links that provide readers with both a means of verifying the sources drawn upon and visiting those sources to learn more about a topic. In analysing how readers approach these links, data was collected on reader engagement with these links on WPM pages and on the rest of Wikipedia over a 32-day period. Readers of WPM pages were found to engage with external links more frequently than readers of the rest of Wikipedia, with WPM readers favoring hovering over a link and footnote clicking, compared to W readers who tended to click more external links per page viewed. Compared to readers of the rest of Wikipedia, WPM readers appear more attentive to the external links function in verifying and authorizing Wikipedia content, than to the educational potential of examining the sources themselves.

Evaluating Large Language Models as Tools to Navigate Researchers in Rapidly Evolving Research Landscapes: A Case Study in Cancer Drug Response Prediction

Large Language Models (LLMs) have emerged as promising tools for assisting researchers in automating and accelerating the synthesis of literature reviews. However, their reliability is a significant concern due to issues like factual inaccuracies and hallucinations. The key question is whether LLMs can reliably provide comprehensive, up-to-date overviews and analyses. This study evaluates the performance of three leading LLMs (OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and DeepSeek) on the complex task of generating a comprehensive survey paper on deep learning for cancer Drug Response Prediction (DRP). By testing both standard and Deep Research (DR) / Deep Think (DT) modes of LLMs with prompts of varying detail, this paper assesses key academic dimensions, including reference management, content quality, and analytical depth. Key findings reveal that while DR modes of LLMs significantly improve reliability by eliminating hallucinations, performance variations exist across models and prompts. A trade-off between reference quantity and integration quality was observed, and even the best-performing models lacked the analytical depth of human experts, often requiring extensive human supervision. The study concludes that LLMs currently serve as powerful assistive tools but still cannot replace the critical validation and synthesis provided by human researchers. Choosing the best LLM to use depends on the task in hand, while several strategies can be implemented to improve the produced output.

Therapeutic Communication Skills Training: An Effective Tool to Improve the Caring Behaviors of ICU Nurses

BackgroundCaring behaviors are crucial in intensive care units (ICU) because patients in these wards require high levels of care. Effective communication with patients is one of the most important factors in caring behaviors of nurses working in ICUs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of therapeutic communication skills training on the caring behaviors of ICU nurese. Materials and MethodsThis experimental pre-test/post-test study was carried out on 105 nurses working in ICUs of hospitals affiliated to Yazd University of Medical Sciences in Iran in 2019. Nurses were randomly assigned into control (52 nurses) and intervention (53 nurses) groups. A two-day therapeutic communication training workshop was conducted for the participants. Data were collected using demographic information questionnaire and caring behaviors questionnaire before and one month after the intervention. ResultsThe findings showed no significant difference between the control and intervention groups regarding the nurses caring behaviors in the pretest (P = 0.148). However, after implementation of the training program, a significant difference was observed in the mean scores of caring behaviors between the two groups. In the control group, the mean scores of caring behaviors decreased significantly after the intervention (P = 0.001); whereas, the mean scores of intervention group increased significantly after the intervention (P = 0.001). ConclusionAccording to the results, ICU nurses training in therapeutic communication skills had a positive effect on their caring behaviors. Therefore, we suggest the authorities prepare and implement educational packages of therapeutic communication skills as a coherent program for other nurses. As a result, the caring behaviors and the quality of cares can be improved for patients.

Developing bio-technical reliability among future researchers and industrial work-force in developing countries: a success story

A common problem in the biotech sector of developing countries is that a large portion of students attain a poor conceptual understanding of the basic theory and/or lack proficiency in basic laboratory skills even as they complete higher studies such as a masters degree. A small scale solution was developed in the form of a unique post-graduate diploma program that imparted reliable skills in students with good theoretical knowledge. The course of 6 to 8 months duration, with an optional 6 months internship, was successfully conducted for 8 batches. Most students of this course inculcated the right laboratory practices. This was evident by safe operations, and precise as well as accurate results of quantitative experiments conducted by them. They learned to work independently as well as in teams. They could create and follow standard operating procedures, and contribute to general laboratory maintenance. Every student also designed, prepared and conducted routine molecular biology experiments. The following aspects are suggested for successfully dealing with the patchy and varied capacities of life science students during higher (post bachelors) studies: a) careful selection of students, b) training with prioritized objectives, c) attention to basic lab-practices, d) opportunities to self-learn, e) structured group discussions, f) teacher(s) with genuine interest and passion, g) reasonable infrastructure, and h) maintaining a good student-instructor ratio. The course objectives, structure, teaching methods, and experiences are presented here along with some of the relevant data, including statistics about improvement in the precision and accuracy in experimental results by students. Limitations in this course and a general critical perspective of the routine higher education have also been discussed briefly.
