Koalas, cameras and a primary school: Obtaining ecological insights for land management through a mini-citizen science project with young students.

Abstract

Koalas are an endangered species in Eastern Australia and the management of habitat revegetation sites is essential for the marsupials survival. This report summarises the results of a partnership between revegetation managers and a local primary school that connected children to real world scientific practice. Ten infrared motion sensor cameras were installed on a five-year-old revegetation offset site in south-east Queensland, Australia to capture movements of koalas and other fauna. Primary school students screened images from these cameras for animal presence in a mini-citizen science project through an easy-to-use website created specifically for this project. Aspects of these results were used to modify the lands management by site supervisors. This report outlines processes involved in having Queensland primary school students participate in a mini web-based citizen science project, presents some of the ecological results obtained through the investigation and makes recommendations for future projects of this type.

Evaluating Large Language Models as Tools to Navigate Researchers in Rapidly Evolving Research Landscapes: A Case Study in Cancer Drug Response Prediction

Large Language Models (LLMs) have emerged as promising tools for assisting researchers in automating and accelerating the synthesis of literature reviews. However, their reliability is a significant concern due to issues like factual inaccuracies and hallucinations. The key question is whether LLMs can reliably provide comprehensive, up-to-date overviews and analyses. This study evaluates the performance of three leading LLMs (OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and DeepSeek) on the complex task of generating a comprehensive survey paper on deep learning for cancer Drug Response Prediction (DRP). By testing both standard and Deep Research (DR) / Deep Think (DT) modes of LLMs with prompts of varying detail, this paper assesses key academic dimensions, including reference management, content quality, and analytical depth. Key findings reveal that while DR modes of LLMs significantly improve reliability by eliminating hallucinations, performance variations exist across models and prompts. A trade-off between reference quantity and integration quality was observed, and even the best-performing models lacked the analytical depth of human experts, often requiring extensive human supervision. The study concludes that LLMs currently serve as powerful assistive tools but still cannot replace the critical validation and synthesis provided by human researchers. Choosing the best LLM to use depends on the task in hand, while several strategies can be implemented to improve the produced output.

Antibiotic Use and Resistance in Zambia's Aquaculture Sector: Assessing Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Among Fish Farmers

Aquaculture in Zambia is rapidly growing, contributing significantly to food security and income generation. However, the intensification of fish farming raises concerns about antimicrobial use (AMU) and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of fish farmers regarding AMU and AMR across 25 districts in Zambias ten provinces. Data were collected from fish farmers using a structured questionnaire distributed via district fisheries officers and analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics, including logistic regression. The results revealed significant gaps in knowledge, with only 17.4% of farmers classified as knowledgeable about AMU and AMR. Attitude assessments showed that 60.5% exhibited positive attitudes toward responsible AMU practices, while the remaining 39.5% displayed negative perceptions. In terms of practices, 76.5% adhered to good practices, including consulting veterinary professionals and responsible antibiotic use, whereas 23.5% engaged in poor practices. Key factors influencing KAP outcomes included age, farming experience, and annual production capacity. Farmers aged 30-39 years and those with 1-5 years of experience demonstrated significantly more positive attitudes (p < 0.05), while those with higher production capacities (501-1000 kg) exhibited better practices (p < 0.001). The findings highlight critical knowledge gaps and inconsistent practices regarding AMU and AMR among Zambian fish farmers. Targeted interventions, including education programs, enhanced access to veterinary services, and strengthened regulatory frameworks, are essential to promote responsible AMU, mitigate AMR risks, and ensure the sustainability of aquaculture in Zambia.

Deep Learning-Driven Gender Classification of Drosophila melanogaster: Advancing Real-Time Analysis with Mobile Integration

Researchers extensively use Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism in genetic research and developmental studies to better understand human diseases such as cancer and diabetes. For such investigations, it is necessary to identify and classify male and female flies. This study uses deep learning techniques for gender classification of Drosophila melanogaster via models YOLOv8, Detectron2, ResNet-50, InceptionV3, and MobileNet. Benchmarking revealed that YOLOv8 achieved a maximum accuracy of 98.0%. The classification and object detection models are integrated into a mobile application, facilitating real-time gender classification. This study demonstrates the possibility of integrating deep learning models with mobile technology while ensuring an efficient way for gender prediction, leading to better reproducibility and generating new opportunities in biological research.
