Phytochemical characterization and antimicrobial properties of Azadirachtin indica against selected bacterial human pathogens

The study was conducted to assess the phytochemical and antibacterial potentials of Azadirechtin indica against Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa using microbiological techniques. Ethanol and water were used to extract the active components from the Azadirechtin indica leaves. Salmonella typhi showed range of inhibition zone from 11mm to 16mm at 50% to 90% concentrations of the plant ethanolic extract. Staphylococcus aureus had a range of inhibition zone from 10mm to 13mm at 50% to 90 % concentrations of the plant ethanolic extract and Pseudomonas aeruginosa had a range of inhibition zone from 10mm to 12mm at 50% to 90% concentrations of the plant ethanolic extract. Ethanol extract showed greater antibacterial activity against the test organisms when compared with the aqueous extract. Preliminary screening of phytochemicals in the leaf extract of Azadirechtin indica revealed the presence of alkaloids (7.376mg/100g), saponins (12.041mg/100g), flavonoids (2.641mg/100g), tannins (3.431mg/100g) and cyannogenic glycosides (0.952 mg/100g). This result provides scientific support for Azadirechtin indica to be further investigated and used as drug.

Assessing the antimicrobial activity of Aframomum melegueta and Piper guineense extract on pathogens of rot diseases of cucumber fruit

The inhibitory potential of Aframomum melegueta and Piper guineense extract against the pathogens of fruit rot diseases of cucumber was assessed. Two fungal isolates isolated from rotten cucumber fruits were; Fusarium oxysporium and Penicillium sp. The test plant extract were prepared in concentrations of 100% and 70%. The antimicrobial potential of ethanolic extract of Piper guineense at 100% concentration against Fusarium oxysporium revealed inhibition zone of 26.6 mm while 70% concentration of same plant extract had 17.0 mm. Ethanolic plant extract of A. melegueta at 100% concentration showed 7.5 mm and 70% concentration of same plant extract had 6.5 mm. Aqueous plant extract of both plants showed very minimal inhibitory effect on F. oxysporium which ranged from 0.00mm to 8.5mm. For Penicillium sp, ethanolic extract of Piper guineense at 100% showed inhibition of 18.0mm and at 70% concentration of same plant extract showed inhibition of 12.5mm. Ethanolic plant extract of A. melegueta at 100% concentration inhibited the growth of Penicillium sp with inhibition zone of 15.5mm and the 70% concentration of same plant extract showed 11.5mm inhibition zone. The aqueous plant extract at 100% revealed inhibition zone of 15.5 mm and 70% concentration showed no inhibition. The phytochemical screening of test plants revealed the presence of most of the phytochemicals tested in abundance with very few exception.

Assessing the Antimicrobial potentials of selected Plant Extracts against Post Harvest White Yam Rot

Antimicrobial potentials of selected aqueous and ethanolic plant extracts against post-harvest white yam rot was studied. Different concentrations (0.05%, 0.1%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 5.0% and 10%) of the selected plant extract Azadirachta indica, Chromolaena odorata, Cymbopogan citratus, Ocimum gratissimum, Zingiber officinale and Allium sativum were prepared. Fungi associated with post-harvest yam rot isolated and their percentage occurrence were; F oxysporum (23.7%), Penicillium oxalicum (27.55%), Botryodiploidia theobromae (10.98%), Aspergillus niger (17.89%), Sclerotium rolfsii (19.82%). The effect of selected plant extract on the growth of fungal isolates revealed ethanolic extract of Allium sativum having a very high growth inhibitory effect on all the fungal isolates which ranged from 71.8{+/-}0.98% to 100{+/-}0.00% at between 1.0% and 10% concentration of the plants extract. The aqueous plant extract of Allium sativum showed high inhibitory effect on all the fungal isolates but slightly lower than the ethanolic extract. Other plants extracts varied in their fungal inhibitory effect depending on the fungi. The phytochemical analysis of selected plants extracts showed the presence of most phytochemicals except for very few exceptions.
